Welcome...

My perspective on healing after loss is not what you'll usually find. I use a holistic approach and a definition of loss that encompasses, but goes beyond, the classic stages of grief. In my 30 years as a psychotherapist I've expanded my view of grief to emphasize the intense individuality of each loss.

ONLY YOU HAVE YOUR HISTORY!

Your healing must address your unique experience of pain and the particular impact of your loss. In each loss (regardless of the type), there are two complex sets of feelings that pressure you from within. One set centers on all the feelings associated with the process of grief. The second set of feelings are centered about the specific loss itself and its meaning to you. The link between these complex emotional states is how you have learned to think of and cope with experiencing intense emotions. This complex "learning" about feelings began in your childhood and family and impacts you throughout your life history.

I hope that the variety of resources offered on this website will help you...not only to survive but to prevail in healing from your loss.

However, if you find that you want more individualized contact and professional help and/or are interested in the workshops, seminars or discussions, please see the Services Dr. Celia offers.

Biography

Celia A. Ward, Ph.D.(Dr. Celia), a Clinical Psychologist, has been in the private practice of individual and group psychotherapy for over thirty years in Washington, D.C. She came to Washington from New York and did a two-year internship in Clinical Psychology at St. Elizabeths Hospital. She was on staff at St. Elizabeths Hospital and then went into private practice. She obtained two years of private training in psychoanalytic-psychotherapy with children, though currently limiting her practice to adolescents and adults. She taught at the Metropolitan Mental Health Skills Center (Washington School of Psychiatry) and Abnormal Psychology at George Washington University. She is a member of many professional psychology organizations, has lectured publicly, been quoted widely and has appeared on many radio talk shows.

She knows personally the pain of grief, having experienced multiple losses. These losses, combined with the birth and death of a neurologically damaged child radically changed her life, personally and professionally. As she discovered what was necessary to heal from the pain she felt it imperative to reevaluate her personal values and beliefs about life. The direction of Dr. Celia's professional life, as a psychotherapist, changed dramatically. Combining her professional skills with the healing experiences from her own multiple losses, Dr. Celia founded The Loss Counseling Centerā of Washington in 1985. The Center reflects her personal and professional commitment and dedication to help others cope with their feelings of grief and heal in a way that will help them rebuild their lives in a positive and loving way.

Dr. Celia founded The Loss Counseling Center expressly to focus attention on the many and varied experiences of loss people deal with throughout life
  • to make it easier and more acceptable to seek help for all types of loss through the Center
  • to bring to greater public attention that loss is a powerful stressor that affects individuals not only emotionally but physically in both the short and long-term.
  • to promote prevention of further emotional distress, interpersonal conflicts and the development of many physical illnesses by early intervention.
  • to alleviate existing emotional conflicts and physical illnesses that are connected with current and unresolved grief.

This site is intended to meet your needs for information and services. Your suggestions as to what you would like to see here are invited and welcomed. Please contact Dr. Celia with your ideas.
